Street pays bargain $140,000 for ‘faultless’ colt at strong Karaka yearling sale
Lincoln Farms struck early on the first day of the yearling sales round at Karaka today buying a colt which trainer Ray Green called faultless.
Lot 20, by champion stallion Bettor’s Delight, is the fourth foal of Kamwood Elsie, making him a brother to former crack filly Lancewood Lizzie who won more than $250,000.
In a spirited bidding duel, Lincoln Farms’ boss John Street snagged the colt for $140,000, the second equal highest price of the day, overpowering top trainer Barry Purdon, who trained Lancewood Lizzie to nine of her 13 wins.
And Green called the colt cheap at the price, expecting that, with all his attributes, he would need to pay at least $200,000 to secure him.
“Everything about him is what I look for in a horse,’’ said Green of the yearling named Dior Sauvage.
“He had a huge front end and a good temperament, I just couldn’t fault him.
“I rated him the best colt in the sale.’’
Just one lot later, Street was signing the sales docket again for a cracking Rock N Roll Heaven colt, Jeff Beck, this time for $80,000.
His half sister is even more famous, The Orange Agent having dominated her age group, winning 13 of her first 19 starts and 18 in all, including four Group I races.
He is the eighth foal of the mare Lady Fingers, who has had four to the races for four winners, the most recent Australasian record-breaking filly Cheesy Fingers, who posted a 1:50.3 mile at Menangle last month within days of landing in Australia after being sold out of Bunty and Gareth Hughes’ stable.
A flashy colt with a high head carriage, he was also high on Green’s shopping list, fulfilling his main criteria of buying types that will make two-year-olds.
“I like the Rock N Roll Heavens. The first one I had was Killer Queen (who won six races here and another three in Australia).’’
Champion Carabella in pedigree
But Green was even more pleased to snag lot 81, Spice It Up, a filly by new sire Captaintreacherous out of Soul Sister, offered by Robert Famularo’s Dancingonmoonlight Farm in Ohoka.
While her dam was unraced, granddam Andress Blue Chip is a virtual household name in the harness breeding world, her pinup offspring the freakish filly Carabella, who won 17 of her 19 races.
“She’s a quality filly,’’ said Green. “She’s a beautiful mover and I couldn’t fault her either.
“I suppose you’re taking a punt on the sire but she’s worth $55,000 to find out.’’
Captaintreacherous, a son of the ill-fated champion stallion Somebeachsomewhere, hasn’t yet had any progeny to the racetrack in the southern hemisphere. The winner of 21 of his 26 starts at two and three he was, however, the leading sire of juveniles in the United States last year.
Bagging the filly made up for losing out on lot 22, a Bettor’s Delight filly who went to the $120,000 bid of Dylan Ferguson, on behalf of Graeme Rogerson.
“But that didn’t bother me really,’’ said Green. “I love the filly we bought and we got the colt we wanted too.’’
The remaining two of Lincoln Farms’ five buys today had close ties to the stable, Street going to $34,000 for Louie The Punter, a full brother to its smart two-year-old Double Or Nothing (lot 50) and $30,000 for an American Ideal colt who is a full brother to the West Australian superstar (My) Hard Copy who won 27 races and $1.27 million.
Sentimental buy
Green admitted the colt was somewhat of a sentimental buy, his wife Debbie having bought Hard Copy for $4000 as a foal before later selling him to Australia.
Green wasn’t put off by the colt, named The Informant, being a November foal and hence quite small.
“Hard Copy was smaller than him. We got him fairly cheaply because there’s nothing spectacular about him, he’s a skinny-arsed little fella.’’
Debbie Green recalled Hard Copy had a bigger shoulder and little more swagger about him.
All four of the mare Readallaboutit’s foals have been by American Ideal, who stands at the Clevedon farm of vendor Woodlands Stud.
All in all Street paid $339,000 for just five of the dozen or so yearlings he plans to secure this week and Green has a short list of some 50 horses he will inspect in Christchurch tomorrow before New Zealand Bloodstock’s pacing sale continues there on Wednesday.

Race 4: Lincoln La Moose
6.59pm
“His last race was a non-event - he got back and they walked and sprinted home so you can’t condemn him on that. His first-up run was a better guide. He’s going all right but he’s no superstar, just a good, honest little fella. It’s all about getting a trip with him so he’ll need a little luck from five.”
