Lincoln Rocks gives the Streets a deserved win after premature end to mum’s racing career

“Mum’s come through for us.”

That was the over-riding reaction from Lincoln Farms’ boss John Street after Lincoln Rocks exploded home to clear maidens at Waverley on Friday.

Street and his wife Lynne called time on the commercial breeding arm of their operation a number of years ago and today retain only one broodmare of their own, Lincoln Rocks’ mum Princess Maryanne.

You couldn’t blame them for having a soft spot for the Darci Brahma mare, and keeping her, considering she was tipped to have a stellar career in front of her after winning her debut at Hastings in July, 2017 by four and a quarter lengths.

In the worst stroke of luck, Princess Maryanne injured a tendon in her second start and never raced again.

“We were sad to lose her so early on,” Street said. “She was fast and Lisa Latta rated her a very, very good filly.”

It’s only justice then that the mare’s very first foal Lincoln Rocks looks to have inherited some of mum’s ability.

“We’re pretty excited about him. I know it was only a maiden at Waverley but he ran a good time and Lisa said he could be a really nice stayer as a four-year-old.”

In winning at just his sixth start, and first start over ground, Lincoln Rocks clocked 2:18.87 for the 2200 metres. That compared very favourably with the 2:17.62 run by the impressive rating 74 winner Posh Porotene later in the day.

Street initially thought the three-year-old was too far off the leaders halfway through the race to be a factor.

But when Wiremu Pinn crept up behind the leaders turning for home and brought him to the outside he could see the horse was “really travelling.”

“He apparently doesn’t like racing too close to other horses in the field but once the jockey got him out wide he really put in.

“We’ll try to win another race with him before putting him aside,” Street said.

Lincoln Rocks is also expected to perform better on tracks much wetter than today’s dead 4 footing given he is by Road To Rock.

The Wellfield Stud sire, who was euthenised in April 2020 after a long battle with laminitis, is best known for leaving dual Hong Kong Horse of the Year Beauty Generation.

The Streets have four more of Princess Maryanne’s progeny in the pipeline - a two-year-old Belardo filly named Lincoln Lady with Stephen Marsh, a Belardo yearling colt, a Sweynesse weanling filly and a Ribchester foal in utero.

Race 5: Billy Lincoln
2.15pm

“He’s drawn beautifully in barrier one with top hoop Kevin Stott to ride and he’s fitter for his three runs back. I think he’ll race very well and is a nice each-way chance. But it’s a very good field - the favouritre Arabian Songbird they think is one out of the box and my other horse Bourbon Empress is also going very well. Put him in your trifectas and first fours. I think he’ll be right there.”
