Kuroshio two-year-old’s a real dude with a super attitude

He’s certainly got the looks and he’s bred to run.

And when Lincoln Farms’ newest galloper had his first test at today’s Levin jumpouts he did nothing but please trainer Lisa Latta.

An as yet unnamed two-year-old gelding by Kuroshio, the smart black contested a six-horse heat over 650 metres and did everything right for rider Robbie Hannam.

Jumping out well, he sat third on the fence, just in behind the leader, came out at the top of the straight and challenged nicely to finish second, beaten a length.

“It was a very nice first jumpout and he will take natural improvement form it,’’ says Latta.

“He’s a really good looking horse, nice and strong, and has a super attitude.’’

Latta will now take the gelding back to the Levin jumpouts on March 13, where she will run him over more ground.

And she hasn’t ruled out trying him before the season’s end.

“He’s bred to be a two-year-old.’’

Bought at last November’s ready to run sale for $150,000, the youngster’s sire Kuroshio is a son of Exceed And Excel. Kuroshio himself had blistering early two-year-old speed and made a big impression with his first European crop, the eldest of which are three.

The gelding is out of Myskina, who is a half sister to the speedy Miss Kournikova, who numbered among her five wins the Group I Oakleigh Plate.

He will be raced by Lincoln Farms’ John and Lynne Street, Ian Middleton and Jeff and Vicky Roach.

The Declaration Of War two-year-old was gelded after impressively winning a jumpout at Levin last December and according to Latta has come back an even better galloper.

Today, under Tim Johnson, he was given a quiet run, finishing a close third in a four-horse heat.

“He jumped well and sat third in the running,’’ says Latta. “He quickened up nicely in the straight and, under no pressure, was beaten less than a length.

“It was a very pleasing jumpout. He is a horse with a lot of ability and he was certainly a lot better behaved today after being gelded.

“That will clean him up nicely and we can head to the races either at Wellington on March 9 or the week later.’’

Latta sent the horse to the paddock last November when he wasn’t doing well but says he has looked a different horse this time in.

Today he contested a six-horse heat with Hannam up, jumped nicely and sat in the trail.

“He got the gap on the inside across the top and quickened up nicely to run second and was not put under any pressure.

“Robbie said it was the best he has felt for a long time and I think he’s the best he has looked this time in.

“He’s taken a long time but it’s because he’s been growing. He’s a big boy now.’’

Lincoln Hanover, who raced once at two, when down the track in heavy ground, will resume at either Awapuni on Friday week or Otaki the following week.

Another Lincoln Farms three-year-old who has been given plenty of time by Latta, Platinum Rapper, trialled at Awapuni on Tuesday where she got back to last and was doing her best work late to finish fourth of six over 1000 metres.

Platinum Rapper hasn’t raced since last June but Latta will now find a race for her, hopefully on rain-affected ground.

“She’s a nice filly but really needs the fire out of the track.’’
